Myopia

May 16, 2023

Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, is the counterpart to Hyperopia. Where Hyperopic patients have difficulty seeing objects up close, (reading, sewing, etc), myopic patients have difficulty seeing objects from a distance (television, street signs, etc.). This is caused by an abnormally long ocular axis, in which light rays come into focus in front of the retina. Blurry vision, eye strain and headaches are commonly associated with this refractive error if left untreated. Individuals with myopia see close objects clearly, but anything at a distance is blurry.
Myopia often first presents in children, between the age of eight and 12. It is an inherited condition, so if your parents are nearsighted, you will likely become nearsighted. When the body begins to grow a lot during teenage years, myopia can become worse. Typically, between 20-40, the eyesight will not continue to worsen.

Monofocal Lens

May 16, 2023

Monofocal lens implants are capable of correcting vision at distance or at near but not both.
When choosing a monofocal lens implant, most patients elect to have their distance vision corrected. For patients who do not have significant corneal astigmatism, there is a very high likelihood that they won't need glasses for far vision. However, these patients will still require reading glasses for near tasks.
Generally there are different types of monofocal lenses available. At the Benjamin Eye Institute we utilize only the best high contrast sensitivity monofocal lenses. Unlike at some places, we do no charge patients for the use of 'High Technology' monofocal IOL's at Benjamin Eye Institute.
A good example of a 'high technology' monofocal IOL is Tecnis IOL.

Macular degeneration is an incurable eye disease affecting more than 10 million Americans. It is the leading cause of vision loss in those aged 55 or older in the U.S. Macular degeneration is the degeneration of the macula, the part of the retina responsible for the sharp, central vision needed for driving and reading.
There are two forms of macular degeneration: wet and dry. The dry form is more common than the wet form, and the wet form leads to more serious vision loss. Know the signs and symptoms of this disease, as early detection is key to stopping further damage.
